Last week(14th june) I spent a couple of mornings in Kelly’s Resort Rosslare training new Wolverhampton signing and Ireland’s Stephen Hunt. Stephen is recovering from a broken foot and has been out of action for the past 3 and a half months and with two weddings under his belt in the previous 5 days he was feeling in need of heart pumping sweat inducing couple of sessions. The obvious limitation was his foot which had to cared for like the crown jewels.
Monday started with a full body resistance session of: -single leg squats(good leg obviously)-med.ball press-ups-leg extensions(I’m not a fan of this exercise but it’s the only means of strenghtening hi injured quad)-chin-ups-stability ball hamstring curls-dumbell shouilder presses-TRX inverted rows
3 sets of 10,12, 14 repetitions of each exercise with no rest in between with 90 seconds recovery after each full round. He finished off with some single leg planks and back extensions.
Tuesday was more pure cardio, interval style.-TRX suspended mountain climbers – Seated punching (He can’t stand because of foot) Single leg Rowing(150 meters) the first two exercises were performed for 20 seconds with 20 seconds recovery. the Rower for 150 meters aiming for under 34 seconds, remember he was using only one leg.
A good time for 150 meters with both of your legs would be 28 to 30seconds.I mentioned these times to Stephen and on the first round he hit 34 ,the second round although looking like he was totally exhausted he mustered 30.1 .I gave him an extra 15 seconds recovery before the start of last set and with his eyes closed and his shaggy perm:) swaying back and forth he hit 28.1 seconds.
For pure guts and determination he is hard to beat,no excuses,no moaning,he just gets on with it and pushes himself .We finished with a long stretch and walk in the simming pool. Wednesday was a pool session consisting of walking and swimming with with a float between his knees.
That night Stephen flew over to Wolves for his two day medical and after everything going successfully he signed at the weekend. Not bad for a lad who in his earlier days was considered in some quarters to be too small, too weak and too cocky!Well done.
